Research also shows that yoga may help individuals with a variety of issues including addiction, trauma and chronic illness.  Many prisoners suffer from trauma, which is held deeply in the mind and the body.  Being incarcerated, in of itself is a traumatic life experience   Yoga for incarcerated individuals helps prisoners reconnect with their bodies, heart and mind; in turn cultivating compassion and empathy for oneself and others.  Yoga programs in the criminal justice system, such as SATYA’s, are being linked to greater rehabilitation and reduced recidivism, serving not only those who are incarcerated, but the greater community as well.
